Payday Super Is Here: What Employers Need to Know
Payday Super has now started, changing when employers pay superannuation for their employees. Here’s what the new rules mean for employers, business owners and employees, and the practical steps to take next.
What is Payday Super?
From 1 July 2026, employers generally need to pay superannuation each payday rather than waiting for the quarterly payment cycle. The aim is to get super into employees’ accounts sooner and reduce unpaid super.
Super contributions must generally reach the employee’s super fund within 7 business days after payday to be considered paid on time, unless a longer timeframe applies—for example, in some cases involving new employees.
What does this mean for employers?
Payday Super is both a compliance change and a cash-flow change. Employers should review their payroll process, payment timing and internal controls so super is paid accurately and on time.
- Review payroll systems: Confirm your payroll software can calculate and process super contributions each pay cycle.
- Plan cash flow: Super will leave the business more frequently, so make sure payment amounts are included in each pay-cycle forecast.
- Check employee details: Incorrect fund or member information can lead to rejected payments and delays.
- Reconcile payments: Compare payroll records with payment confirmations and investigate rejected or missing contributions promptly.
- Coordinate with your accountant or bookkeeper: Make sure responsibilities, payment approvals and record-keeping are clear.
July 2026 transition arrangements
During July, employers may have multiple super payments due, including the final quarterly payment due on 28 July 2026. The ATO says payments made up to 28 July will be applied to the outstanding quarterly amount first.
If a fund rejects a payment, review the error, correct the details and resubmit the payment as soon as possible.
What does this mean for employees?
Employees should see super contributions appear more frequently in their accounts. Check that your employer and super fund have the correct fund and member details, and monitor your account as the new payment cycle settles in.
How to prepare
- Employers: Review payroll settings, update cash-flow forecasts, confirm payment responsibilities and test your process early.
- Business owners: Ask your accountant or bookkeeper how the change affects your payroll controls and working-capital planning.
- Employees: Confirm your super fund details are correct and follow up if expected contributions do not appear.
