Superannuation Strategies for Every Life Stage
Updated 4 October 2026 | By Willow Wealth Partners
Superannuation strategies should change as your life changes. Early in your career, the priority may be choosing a suitable fund and building a saving habit. Later, it may be balancing contributions with debt, family costs and a clearer retirement date.
The aim is to make your super work with the rest of your finances. Your age is a useful starting point, but your income, available cash, investment risk and access to super matter too.
In your 20s and 30s: build a sound foundation
Start by checking where your super is, whether employer contributions are arriving and what fees and insurance premiums you pay. These checks can be useful even when your balance is modest.
Combining accounts may reduce duplicated costs, but check insurance and other benefits before transferring. Replacement insurance may have different terms or may not be available. Defined benefit funds need particular care. Moneysmart’s consolidation guide explains these checks.
Choose investments with your time horizon and ability to tolerate losses in mind. A growth option can fluctuate significantly; being young does not make it suitable for everyone. Compare risk, fees and performance over a meaningful period rather than choosing last year’s strongest performer.
If extra contributions fit your budget, consider a sustainable amount. Keep money available for emergencies and near-term goals as well. Our financial planning guide for young professionals puts these decisions in a broader context.
In your 40s and 50s: connect contributions to your plan
Higher earnings or a smaller mortgage may create room for extra super contributions. Work out what you can commit without leaving your household short of accessible cash. Career breaks, caring responsibilities and business income can change that capacity.
For 2026–27, the general concessional contributions cap is $32,500. Employer contributions, salary sacrifice and personal contributions claimed as tax deductions share this cap across your funds.
You may be able to use unused concessional cap amounts from the previous five years if your total super balance was less than $500,000 at the previous 30 June. Eligibility and available amounts need checking; a low balance earlier in your career does not establish eligibility now. See the ATO’s concessional cap and carry-forward guidance.
Example: allowing for employer contributions
If $14,000 of employer contributions will reach your fund during 2026–27, the $32,500 general cap leaves $18,500 before counting any salary sacrifice or deductible personal contributions. This is an illustration of cap arithmetic, not a suggested contribution amount. Your actual receipts, eligibility and any carry-forward amounts may differ.
Check fund records as well as ATO information, which can lag reporting. If you intend to claim a personal deduction, confirm the paperwork and timing with your tax adviser. For more on higher-income considerations, see our superannuation strategies for high-income earners.
Considering a larger after-tax contribution?
The general non-concessional contributions cap is $130,000 for 2026–27. These are after-tax contributions for which you do not claim a deduction. They generally do not attract contributions tax within the applicable rules; future investment earnings have their own tax treatment.
Your age, total super balance and any existing bring-forward arrangement can affect the amount you may contribute. Some people have a nil cap; others may qualify to bring forward future caps. Confirm your position before transferring a lump sum using the ATO’s non-concessional contribution guidance.
In your 60s and beyond: plan access and income
Reaching 60 does not automatically give unrestricted access to all your super. You need to meet an applicable condition of release, such as retirement or ending an employment arrangement after 60. At 65, access is generally available regardless of whether you still work. Moneysmart explains the main access rules.
A transition-to-retirement income stream can provide limited access while working. It has payment restrictions and is not automatically a retirement-phase pension with exempt investment earnings.
Before starting a retirement pension, map the payments you need alongside other income and accessible savings. Check your personal transfer balance cap, required pension payments, investment mix and beneficiary nominations. Our guide to retirement plans for self-funded retirees explores the wider planning decision.
Understand what the tax benefit actually covers
In a conventional taxed super fund, concessional contributions are generally taxed at 15%, with additional Division 293 tax potentially applying to higher-income individuals. Accumulation investment earnings are generally taxed at concessional rates; qualifying retirement-phase earnings can be exempt under the relevant rules.
Tax on contributions, investment earnings and payments to you are separate questions. Untaxed funds and some other arrangements have different treatment. Moneysmart’s tax and super overview provides a starting point.
Large individual balances can also be affected by Division 296 tax. Include this in a broader review where relevant.
A practical review at any life stage
Gather your fund statements, contribution records and current budget. Review:
- How much accessible cash you need before retirement.
- Whether extra contributions fit your available cap and household finances.
- Whether your investment mix matches your goals and tolerance for losses.
- Fees, insurance, beneficiaries and any benefits affected by changing funds.
- How your super decisions fit with your partner’s position and other assets.
Willow Wealth Partners can help connect these decisions through our superannuation and SMSF services and retirement planning services.
